From Change Management to Transformation Management: Embracing the FLUX Mindset

In an era marked by relentless change and digital transformation, traditional change management is increasingly losing relevance. Initially designed to address the challenges of a VUCA world — Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity — this approach struggles to keep pace with today’s dynamic environment. We are no longer in a VUCA world; instead, we are in a state of FLUX. This new context is characterized by continuous transformation and demands a fundamentally different approach to organizational change (McKinsey, 2025).

The main message of this text is that traditional change management, rooted in the VUCA framework, is no longer sufficient for today’s constantly evolving business environment. Instead, organizations must adopt the FLUX mindset, which embraces continuous transformation as a core strategy. This approach requires leaders to move from merely managing change to integrating transformation as a continuous rhythm within the organization’s culture. Successful leaders in a FLUX world are those who proactively shape change rather than just reacting to it.

Many organizations still perceive change as an episodic event — something to manage, complete, and then move past. This mindset is rooted in the traditional VUCA framework, which primarily aims to control change rather than evolve with it. In this context, change management seeks to control outcomes, focusing heavily on managing resistance. This often leads to a perception of change as a disruption that needs to be mitigated. Studies have shown that this approach can result in significant delays and hinder long-term adaptability, as it prioritizes stability over flexibility (Bloomberg, 2025; FT, 2025; Wired, 2025).

The FLUX mindset, on the other hand, acknowledges that change is not an isolated challenge but a continuous, evolving process. Rather than being treated as an obstacle, change becomes an integral part of the organization’s fabric. This perspective encourages leaders to develop adaptive capacity, fostering resilience and strategic alignment to thrive in unpredictable conditions. In FLUX thinking, change is not something to be managed once and forgotten; it is a constant, dynamic force that drives innovation and organizational evolution (McKinsey, 2025).
