Waves are created by energy passing through water, causing it to move in a circular motion.
There a 2 main characteristics of a wave:
e amplitude: the vertical distance from mean level to crest, measured in metres.
H – wave height: the vertical height from crest to trough, measured in metres. It is equal to twice the amplitude.
There are four basic types of breaking water waves. They are spilling, plunging, collapsing, and surging
The World Meteorological Organisation and MetService use the Douglas Sea Scale to define sea state. It was developed in the 1920s by Captain H.P. Douglas, and its purpose is to estimate the roughness of the sea (see figure three).
